No time for celebration yet but according to polling by the Pew Research Center for the People and the PressDemocrats Hold Double-Digit Lead in Competitive Districts
GOP Troubles Extend into Home Territory
With polls showing likely Democratic gains, Republicans are pinning their hopes on getting out the vote. But studies show eroding GOP support among white evangelicals, a dependably Republican group.
Their biggest hope is those states with gay marriage bills on the ballot motivating conservative voters out of their church pews, yet some conservative voters who are personally opposed to gay marriage are just as opposed to constitutional restraints on personal freedoms.
James Dobson sounded a warning call Tuesday to evangelical Christian voters, painting the potential consequences of sitting out next week's midterm elections in stark, partisan terms. He described a liberal Democratic takeover of key congressional committees, a paralyzed Bush administration, and crippling setbacks in battles against abortion and gay marriage.
Actor Michael J. Fox -- who hit the campaign trail last week touting the merits of candidates who support embryonic stem-cell research -- told ABC News that despite campaigning in Missouri, he's not actually read the state's proposed Cloning and Embryonic Stem Cell Research Amendment.
"In the ad now running in Missouri," Stephanopoulos said, "Jim Caviezel speaks in Aramaic. It means, 'You betray me with a kiss.' And his position, his point, is that actually even though down in Missouri they say the initiative is against cloning, it's actually going to allow human cloning.""Well, I don't think that's true," Fox said. "I have to qualify it by saying I'm not qualified to speak on the page-to-page content of the initiative. Although, I am quite sure that I'll agree with it in spirit, I don't know, I -- On full disclosure, I haven't read it, and that's why I didn't put myself up for it distinctly."
Many of the independent state-level family-policy councils associated with Focus on the Family have prepared voter guides for the upcoming election and made them available online.
The purpose of the guides is to help voters make informed decisions on Election Day based on where candidates stand on important issues. They are perfectly legal to share with family, friends or fellow church members.
As I said above no time for celebration yet but an Elon Poll described in today's News & Observer gives a nod to Larry Kissell in NC-08 as described in The Southern Dem's post this morning.
