NC-11 Shuler endorsement, Taylor reversal

Charles Taylor foresaw the Iraq quagmire yet still sticks by George Bush's failed policy of "stay the course".

To intervene militarily might so weaken Iraq that it would be invaded and partitioned by its neighbors as soon as we left the country.  Such an event could involve the United States in an open ended commitment that would be a genuine quagmire in a part of the world that is rather alien to us.

See for yourself, in a letter he wrote and then call Congressman Taylor to find out why he changed his mind.

Be warned, Taylor will not stick by whatever he says.

That's why we need Heath Shuler for NC-11.

But don't take my word for it.  Heath Shuler was endorsed today by the Asheville Citizen Times:
Shuler offers hope for a new direction

During the past 16 years, we have often disagreed with Taylor on issues and been dismayed by questions about his ethics and reports of his failure to comply with government regulations without being coerced.

Even so, we have supported him because his seniority has helped bring to the district millions of dollars for infrastructure and other projects that support education and jobs.

But the failure of the 109th Congress to deal with the problems that threaten to overwhelm our nation and its unwillingness to act as a check on the Bush administration take precedence in this election.
To support Taylor is to endorse two more years of the same ineffectual leadership.

That's why we need Heath Shuler for NC-11

Taylor favors leaving decisions about when to withdraw from Iraq to military leaders.

Shuler says the status quo is unacceptable and supports setting clear benchmarks to measure success.

That's why we need Heath Shuler for NC-11

Good For AC-T (3.00 / 1)

When this paper endorsed Taylor in 2004, I thought their editorial board must be suckling at Taylor's teats.  This reversal proves that, given a white male conservative Democrat option, even the Asheville paper will roll the dice.

This bodes well for Shuler.  He was also endorsed by the conservative Hendersonville Times-News.

...and that Iraq quote?  Taylor is beholden only to Taylor.  He'll say whatever, do whatever, and then expect no one to hold him accountable.

"Taylor only beholden to Taylor" (3.00 / 1)

Yes, he is and he is having to finance his own campaign, he lacks such support from his constituents.

Filings show Taylor campaign supported primarily by his own money

MIKE BAKER
Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. - Republican Rep. Charles Taylor has nearly drained his campaign account - including about $2.2 million of his own money - in an aggressive attempt to keep his seat in Congress.

Taylor, who's facing perhaps the toughest challenge of his eight-term tenure, had just $136,396 remaining in his campaign coffer as of Oct. 18, according to his latest filings with the Federal Election Commission

-snip-

Taylor - worth more than $50 million, according to past financial disclosure forms - has raised a total of $3.6 million for the election to help purchase a series of large media buys that try to portray Shuler as a Democrat supported by liberal groups. The successful timber producer, banker and developer personally loaned his campaign 60 percent of that money.

By self-financing his campaign, the congressman has triggered the so-called "Millionaire's Amendment," an FEC rule that raises the maximum contribution level for individual Shuler donors from $2,100 to $6,300 and allows party committees to spend an unlimited amount on behalf of the candidate.

Taylor claims in that article that the Shuler campaign is spending as much money is he is but he's lying.  "However, the National Republican Congressional Committee says it has spent even more - $1.2 million - in the district."

Re: "Taylor only beholden to Taylor" (3.00 / 1)

The massive NRCC injection of cash over the weekend didn't include much for NC-11: a couple of thousand for phone-banking, while other districts got hundreds of thousands. To me, that doesn't quite suggest 'abandon hope', but it's as close as it gets: Taylor's left to fend for himself, and WLOS is very happy to take his millions.

Re: Good For AC-T (3.00 / 1)

The C-T endorsed Taylor in 2004 for his porkery, pure and simple. Now even pork isn't enough, and I'm guessing they realise that the House is headed away from the GOP, which means that he's not only losing his chairmanship, but also is likely to come under scrutiny for all of his dubious ethics.

I'd like a mea culpa from them, given that they admit the 109th Congress (that they essentially endorsed) has been atrocious. But this will do.

Taylor is always for Taylor (3.00 / 1)

Why is that a surprise?  Was in Weaverville this weekend and happily surprised to see more support for Shuler among the monsters, ghouls and vampires than in years past when they claimed that Taylor was their leader.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Elon poll Shuler approval (none / 0)

New Elon University Poll shows support for Shuler, low approval for Taylor.  According to the press release:
A new Elon University Poll conducted in North Carolina's 11th U.S. House District shows 51 percent of respondents disapprove or strongly disapprove of Republican incumbent Charles Taylor's job performance in Congress. While 35 percent of respondents approve or strongly approve of Taylor, 47 percent of citizens approve or strongly approve of the Democratic challenger in the Nov. 7 election, Heath Shuler.

First reported by southernphilosopher on Daily Kos earlier today. Apparently there is a NC-08 poll coming out tomorrow from Elon.
